Will a fence keep black bears out of my yard around Pottstown?

Bears aren't only a northern-tier story. Recent sightings have come from West Pottsgrove and Cumru, and a tagged bear has roamed the Temple area.

Short answer

A normal backyard fence won't stop a black bear that wants to get in. Bears climb and push through ordinary wood, vinyl and chain link. What a fence can do is keep your dog contained and away from a bear, and protect a small area like a chicken run, beehive or trash enclosure when it's built for it. The bigger fix is removing what draws bears in. Nuisance activity peaks from about May 1 to June 15.

Recent bear sightings near Pottstown and Reading

  • West Pottsgrove Township, May 2025: multiple black bears, estimated at 300 to 400 lb, were reported near Sylvan Drive, in the township just west of Pottstown borough.
  • Cumru Township, June 2026: a black bear walked through the 300 block of Gouglersville Road in a residential neighborhood.
  • Muhlenberg Township (Temple area): a tagged black bear roamed Laureldale Cemetery and Reading Regional Airport.

The CBS report on the West Pottsgrove bears noted that nuisance bear activity peaks from about May 1 to June 15. If one wanders through your neighborhood, late spring is the most likely time.

What different fences do against a bear

FenceAgainst a bear
4 ft picket or aluminumNo barrier at all; a bear steps or climbs over
6 ft wood or vinyl privacySlows it down and hides the yard, but a motivated bear can climb or push through
Chain linkClimbable; posts and mesh can bend under a large bear's weight
Welded-wire run with a covered topGood for a small area like a chicken coop, if the frame and mesh are heavy enough
Electric fence or electric wire added to another fenceThe usual choice for beehives, coops and gardens, where your township allows it

The goal around a house is not to build a bear-proof perimeter. It's to give a bear no reason to come in and to keep pets and small livestock out of reach if one does.

Fencing what bears are after

  • Trash and recycling. A small enclosure with a latched gate and a roof, or a lockable bin corral, does more than any perimeter fence.
  • Chickens. A covered run with heavy welded wire and a buried or bent-out skirt keeps out foxes and coyotes too. See our page on fencing for backyard chickens.
  • Beehives and compost. These are strong attractants. An electric-wire enclosure is the common approach, but check local rules first.
  • Dogs. A secure dog fence with self-closing gates keeps your dog in the yard instead of chasing a bear into the woods.

Local rules that affect bear-proofing

Taller or electric fences run into zoning. West Pottsgrove caps side and rear fences at 6 ft but allows up to 8 ft for deer fencing. Muhlenberg Township caps fences at 6 ft and allows barbed wire only for agricultural use. Boyertown Borough and Colebrookdale and Pike townships, under their joint zoning ordinance, allow electric fences only to contain farm animals, and only at low intensity, so an electric wire around a beehive or trash corral there needs a conversation with the zoning officer first. Pottstown Borough requires a zoning permit for any fence. We confirm the rule for your address before recommending an electric option.

What to do besides fencing

Fencing works best alongside removing what attracts bears. Keep trash inside until pickup day, take down bird feeders in spring and summer, clean grills and don't leave pet food outside. A bear that finds nothing to eat usually moves on. If one keeps coming back, report it to the Game Commission rather than trying to fence it out.

If you're fencing a dog yard, a coop or a garden in bear country, tell us at the estimate. It changes the mesh, gate hardware and post spacing we'd use.

Common questions

Should I get a taller privacy fence because of bears?

Probably not for bears alone. A taller fence won't reliably stop one, and West Pottsgrove and Muhlenberg both cap ordinary side and rear fences at 6 ft. Spend the money on securing trash and feed.

Will a bear go after my dog inside a fenced yard?

A dog that runs off after a bear is the situation to avoid. A fence that keeps your dog contained, with gates that close on their own, lowers that risk. Bring dogs in at night during peak season.

Are bears a problem in Pottstown borough itself?

The 2025 sightings were in West Pottsgrove, just outside the borough. A yard near a wooded stream corridor could see one passing through, especially in May and June.
