Fence materials & styles

Every material we install, what each is best at, and how local front-yard rules narrow the choice.

Updated

Choosing a fence comes down to four things: what it needs to do (privacy, pets, pool, looks), how much upkeep you’ll accept, what your township allows where it will stand, and budget. Start with a material, then pick a style.

Fence styles

StyleWhat it’s good for
PrivacySolid boards or panels, usually 6 ft, for a backyard nobody can see into. Check the finished-side and height rules for your township.
Semi-privacyShadowbox or spaced boards that break up the view while letting a breeze through. They’re less likely to catch the wind in a storm.
HorizontalModern horizontal slats in cedar, composite or aluminum. A popular upgrade for patios and pools.
PicketThe classic 3–4 ft front-yard fence in wood, vinyl or aluminum. Fits most front-yard height limits.
PoolAt least 48 in with self-closing, self-latching gates and gaps that pass inspection. See our pool fence guide.
PetNo-dig bottoms, puppy pickets and welded wire so dogs stay put.
Split rail & farmOpen post-and-rail for long property lines, pastures and roadside frontage.
SecurityTaller chain link or ornamental steel/aluminum with controlled gates for businesses and HOAs.
