West Pottsgrove Township fence rules

Stowe and Upper Glasgow homeowners get one of the more detailed fence sections in the Pottstown area, including an 8 ft allowance for deer fencing.

Short answer

In West Pottsgrove Township, a residential front-yard fence can be 4 ft tall and must be at least half open, like picket or split rail; solid privacy fences aren't allowed in front. Side and rear fences can be 6 ft. Deer fencing can go to 8 ft. Fences may run up to the lot line but not on it, and never in the street right-of-way (Zoning §20-1.420). Whether a fence needs a zoning permit isn't spelled out, so we confirm it with the Zoning Officer.

RuleWhat the code says
Front yard4 ft, unless the part above 4 ft is at least 4:1 open to solid. In a residential front yard the fence must be at least 1:1 open (picket or split rail). No privacy fences. Walls over 3 ft not allowed (retaining walls excepted)
Side and rear yards6 ft for fences and for walls
Corner lotsEvery yard with street frontage follows the front-yard rules, including the 4 ft limit
Taller fences8 ft for deer fencing; 8 ft beside the CB, PRC and I districts if the part above 6 ft is 25% open; taller screening only by Zoning Hearing Board special exception
PlacementUp to, but not on, the lot line; never in the right-of-way; front fences at least 2 ft off the sidewalk; finished side toward neighbors and streets
PoolsPools, hot tubs and spas must sit inside the building envelope (§20-1.442)

What a front-yard fence can look like

West Pottsgrove names the styles it wants out front: wooden picket or split rail, wrought iron, or materials that imitate them, such as vinyl picket or aluminum. The fence has to be at least as much open space as solid, so a board-on-board or shadowbox panel won't pass even at 4 ft. Chicken wire is specifically ruled out as a front-yard fence. If you'd rather plant, a hedge that stays 3 ft or under at maturity is allowed in place of a front fence.

Front fences also stay at least 2 ft back from the sidewalk. On a shallow front yard, that 2 ft comes out of the space you have to work with, so we measure it at the estimate.

Up to the line, not on it

Many townships let a fence sit right on the boundary. West Pottsgrove's code says a fence may be built up to the lot line but not on it, and it encourages, without requiring, a 2 ft setback from a neighbor's line so you can maintain both faces. Fences don't have to meet the setbacks for sheds and other accessory structures. If only one side of the fence is finished, that side faces the neighbors and the street.

One more placement rule matters on sloped lots: no fence, wall or hedge may block the flow of stormwater unless it is part of a township-approved stormwater system (§20-1.420.B). On a lot where runoff crosses the yard, we leave a gap at grade or use an open style along the low side.

Deer fencing up to 8 ft

Deer fencing is allowed up to 8 ft (§20-1.420.F.3). Most of the townships around Pottstown stop every residential fence at 6 ft, so this gives West Pottsgrove gardeners a legal path to a barrier deer can't clear. The township has wildlife beyond deer, too: several black bears estimated at 300 to 400 lb were reported near Sylvan Drive in May 2025. Our 8 ft deer fence page covers designs that meet the rule.

Where West Pottsgrove is

The township lies west of Pottstown borough with the Schuylkill River as its border with Chester County. U.S. 422 crosses its southern corner and Route 100 clips the eastern edge. Its villages are Stowe and Upper Glasgow, and its addresses read Pottstown 19464, the same as the borough and the other Pottsgroves. About 3,800 people lived here in 2020. See our Pottstown area page for nearby municipalities.

Permits and the parts we couldn't read

The zoning ordinance requires a permit to erect or place any structure, and the application shows the lot, its dimensions and existing and proposed structures. A surveyor's plot plan is required only if the Zoning Officer asks. Fees are set by the Board of Commissioners. We couldn't load the township's website to confirm that a fence specifically needs a permit or what it costs.

  • Pool barrier rules in §20-1.442 beyond the building-envelope requirement weren't readable online.
  • The sight-distance triangle in §20-1.457 wasn't readable, so we get corner-lot dimensions from the township.
  • No barbed-wire or electric-fence rule turned up for homes.

These rules come from West Pottsgrove's published zoning code as checked in October 2026. Codes change, and we confirm with the zoning office before every install.

Common questions

Can I put a 4 ft solid fence in my West Pottsgrove front yard?

No. Front-yard fences on residential lots must be at least 1:1 open, such as picket or split rail, and privacy fences aren't allowed in a front yard.

How far from the property line does a fence have to be?

It can be built up to the lot line but not on it. The code encourages, but doesn't require, a 2 ft setback from an abutting lot line.
