Short answer
One documented Pennsylvania project gives a useful benchmark: Lancaster Farming reported a 1,300 ft woven-wire deer fence with 20 braces and 4 gates that cost $19,500, or about $15 per foot all in. Your cost per foot goes up with more corners and gates, rocky ground and shorter runs, and down on long, straight, open lines. A small garden enclosure often costs more per foot than a big field because braces and gates are spread over fewer feet.
Breaking down the $19,500 example
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Length | 1,300 ft |
| Corner and end braces | 20 |
| Gates | 4 |
| Total reported cost | $19,500 |
| Cost per foot (our math) | About $15 |
From Lancaster Farming's deer-fencing article. The per-foot figure is the total divided by the length, so it includes braces and gates.
Those 20 braces matter. Every corner, end and gate opening in a tensioned wire fence needs a braced post assembly to hold the wire tight, and each one is a big share of the material and labor. Twenty braces on 1,300 ft points to a layout with several corners or openings. A straight run of the same length along one field edge would need far fewer and cost less per foot.
What changes the price around here
| Factor | Pushes cost up | Keeps cost down |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Many corners, curves and gates | Long straight runs |
| Size | Small garden enclosures | Large field perimeters |
| Ground | Reading Prong rock around Boyertown, Bally and Hereford; steep slopes | Deep, stone-free soil like much of the Oley Valley's farmland |
| Site prep | Clearing brush and hedgerows, wooded edges near French Creek State Park | Open, mowed lines |
| Height and rules | Zoning relief where a township caps fences at 6 ft | Townships that allow 8 ft deer fencing |
| Gates | Wide equipment gates | A single walk gate |
Rock is the factor that's hardest to judge from the surface. Berks County's planning documents describe the Reading Prong ridges around Boyertown and Bally as gneiss that weathers into gravelly soils, with some slopes 25 to 60 percent rubble. Every post that needs a rock bit or a breaker adds time. Near Elverson, French Creek State Park's 7,730 acres of hunted forest run right up to many back lines, and wooded edges often need clearing before a fence can go in.
How deer fence compares with other fences
Our published price guide doesn't list a deer-fence range, because the variables above swing it too much to quote blind. For comparison, here's what our residential fences run per foot installed, before gates, removal and permits:
- Split rail (3-rail wood): $22–$35 per foot
- Chain link, 4 ft: $30–$45 per foot
- Pressure-treated pine privacy, 6 ft: $40–$65 per foot
Gates on our price guide run $350–$1,650 for a single walk gate and $800–$2,500 for a double drive gate. On a deer fence, a wide gate for a tractor or mower falls in that second range.
Is there any help paying for it?
Not right now, as far as we know. Lancaster Farming reports that the Game Commission's deer-fence cost-share program ended about 20 years ago, and that a bill was introduced to bring one back.
Ways to spend less
- Fence the garden or orchard block, not the whole property.
- Keep the shape simple: a rectangle needs four corner braces; an L-shape needs six.
- Use one wide gate instead of two narrow ones where you can.
- Clear the line yourself ahead of time if there's brush, and ask us to price it both ways.
- Check your township's height limit first, so you don't pay for zoning relief you could avoid by moving the fence.
At the estimate we'll walk the line, count corners and gates, probe for rock and give you a written per-foot and total price, so you can compare it with the $15 benchmark.
Common questions
Is high-tensile electric cheaper than woven wire?
It can be, but the Berks farmer in Lancaster Farming's article said deer "go right through" high-tensile alone, and the Game Commission officer quoted there recommends 8 ft fence over the older 6 ft high-tensile electric design.
Is the $15 a foot figure current?
It's from a single reported project, and material and labor costs change. Use it as a rough benchmark, not a quote.
Does a deer fence need a permit?
It depends on the township and the height. West Pottsgrove allows 8 ft for deer fencing; Elverson caps residential fences at 6 ft. We check before quoting.
