Short answer
East Coventry Township, Chester County, doesn't allow a residential fence or wall over 6 ft in a required yard unless the part above 6 ft is at least four-to-one open (Zoning §27-1324); retaining walls are excepted. Corner lots must keep a clear sight triangle. Pools need a fence or wall at least 4 ft high, and every pool gate needs a key-operated lock (§27-1313). The code requires a zoning permit for structures, but no township page we found names fences specifically.
| Rule | What the code says |
|---|---|
| Front yard | No separate front-yard height found; the 6 ft required-yard rule applies |
| Side and rear yards | 6 ft; higher only if the part above 6 ft is at least four-to-one open |
| Corner lots | No wall, fence, sign or other structure may obstruct the clear sight triangle; one is required at each intersection (§27-1318) |
| Walls | A freestanding masonry wall counts as a fence (§27-202); retaining walls are excepted from the height rule |
| Utility and government fences | Up to 8 ft |
| Pools | Enclosed by a building wall or a fence or wall at least 4 ft high; gates with key-operated locks, kept closed and locked when the pool isn't in use (§27-1313) |
| Prohibited | No residential material bans found |
| Permit | Zoning permit required for structures (§27-1602); fence-specific confirmation not found |

How tall can a backyard fence be in East Coventry?
Six feet of solid fence is the practical limit in any required yard. Above that, the extra height has to be at least four parts open to one part solid, which fits a wire or open lattice extension better than more boards. The section doesn't set a separate, lower number for the front yard. A front fence still has to stay out of a corner lot's sight triangle, and if you live in a development with a homeowners association, its covenants may set a lower front limit.
Pool fences: plan for a keyed lock
East Coventry's pool section is short but specific. Above-ground or in-ground, the pool has to be enclosed by a wall of a building or by a fence or wall at least 4 ft high. Every gate into the pool area needs a key-operated locking device, and the gates have to be kept closed and locked whenever the pool isn't in use. A standard self-latching gate alone doesn't meet that, so we fit a keyed latch or lock on each pool gate here, on top of the self-closing hardware the state pool code expects.
A raised pool whose wall stands 4 ft or more above the ground doesn't need a separate fence, as long as every approach to its steps is barricaded by a fence or gate with a key-operated lock.
River lots and farm fences
The township runs along the Schuylkill with Route 724 through its north and east and Route 23 across the south. It includes Parker Ford and the Fricks Locks Historic District, an 18th-century village on the old Schuylkill Canal, and about 7,100 people lived here in 2020. On floodplain lots, the code's definitions note that maintaining agricultural fencing isn't treated as an obstruction, but a new residential fence near the river is a question for the zoning office before we dig. Our flood country guide covers the design side.
Applying
The township's zoning permit application asks for three paper copies of the application, a plot plan showing the lot shape, buildings and yards, and the contractor's certificate of insurance. File at the Township Building, 855 Ellis Woods Road, Pottstown (610-495-5443). Part of East Coventry carries Pottstown 19465 addresses, the same ZIP as North Coventry and part of South Coventry; see our Pottstown area page.

Common questions
Does a self-latching gate meet East Coventry's pool rule?
Not by itself. §27-1313 calls for a key-operated locking device on every pool gate, kept locked when the pool isn't in use.
Is a stone wall treated as a fence?
Yes. The zoning definitions count a freestanding masonry wall as a fence, so it follows the same height rule.
